SOUTH GREENLAND SEAWEED

South Greenland Seaweed is a social economic project supported by the association Østifterne.

The project takes place in the settlement Alluitsup Paa/ Sydprøven in South Greenland.

The project will provide new jobs for the settlement and unemployed young people from other parts of the municipality through the development and sale of various seaweed products.

It will also be possible to deal with fish products again.

South Greenland Seaweed (An AMBA) has overtaken Polar Seafood’s shrimp factory and five residential houses in the settlement.

The factory has been closed for 7 years, so a reopening of the has long been a great wish of the village’s residents.

Previous studies carried out by the Nordic Seaweed Project showed that seaweed fishing can be done in a sustainable way, as there is total regrowth after 5 years. It is currently planned to export seaweed to Germany, to produce supplemental feed for sheep and to produce dried seaweed for human consumption.

The project will be in collaboration with the local Fisherman and Hunters’ Association (KNAPP), the Settlement Council and the South Greenland Sheep Farmers’ Association. Close cooperation with the municipality Kommune Qujalleq is also expected.

The project’s factory in Alluitsup Paa.

One of the two ports in Alluitsup Paa. For the time being, 15 tonnes of frozen seaweed will be exportet annually to a company in Germany.

Five residential houses belong to the project. Due to decline in population, there are 40 empty houses in the settlement.

The factory’s cold storage.

It has been agreed that the local fishermen can also use the factory to store and treat fish on the condition that Polar Seafood is offered to buy the products.

Part of the seaweed harvest will take place with seaweed rakes, just as it was done in the research of Nordic Seaweed Project.
